MILWAUKEE (AP) – A former aide to Gov. Scott Walker is set to go to trial.

Tim Russell was Walker’s deputy chief of staff when Walker was Milwaukee County executive. Russell is charged with stealing more than $21,000 from a nonprofit Walker asked him to lead.

Russell’s attorney asked the case be dismissed over an issue with a previous attorney, but a judge denied it Friday. Assistant District Attorney Bruce Landgraf said it was also Russell’s last chance to accept any plea deal.

The jury trial is set to begin Dec. 3.

Five other Walker associates have also been charged. Two were convicted – one of stealing more than $51,000 in donations for veterans and their families; and the other of doing campaign work at her county job.

Walker hasn’t been charged.
