Who’s Doing What: Foley fellowship, Quarles honor and more

Jason Abraham of Hupy and Abraham SC, Milwaukee, participated Sept. 22 in the 18th annual Ridin’ to a Cure event, by the Rock River Harley Owners Group, at Wisconsin Harley-Davidson. The firm also was a sponsor of the ride. Proceeds went to the Rock River Cancer Research Foundation Inc., of which Abraham serves as president.

Abraham has been a board member since 2006. The yearly ride has raised more than $4 million since its inception.

Linda Benfield, managing partner of Foley & Lardner’s Milwaukee office, was elected to a fellowship in the American College of Environmental Lawyers for 2012. According to a news release, Benfield was selected for her experience in environmental law. She earned her law degree from the University of Chicago in 1985.

John Fisher, a health care attorney with Ruder Ware LLSC, Wausau, obtained the designation of Certified Compliance Ethics Professional. The certification is provided by The Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics, a national organization based in Minneapolis. Fisher also obtained his certification in health care compliance from the Health Care Compliance Association. He earned his law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1985.

James Friedman

James Friedman a partner in Quarles & Brady LLP’s Milwaukee office, was honored Oct. 2 with the Charles L. Goldberg Distinguished Service Award by the Wisconsin Law Foundation during the annual Fellows of Wisconsin Law Foundation dinner.

The Goldberg Award honors Friedman’s lifetime achievement in the legal profession and his distinguished record of civic service and commitment to bettering the legal profession.

Friedman is chairman of the firm’s Financial Institutions Practice Group. His practice includes the representation of financial institutions of all types and sizes and their holding companies, as well as manufacturers, service businesses and health care providers in a full array of corporate, transactional and international matters. He earned his law degree from the University of Notre Dame Law School.

• The law firm of Hupy and Abraham SC made a donation of almost $2,000 to pay for DVDs of the documentary “Hot Coffee” for 132 Wisconsin high schools to the Wisconsin Association of Justice’s Civil Justice Education Foundation.

“Hot Coffee” is a 2011 documentary about the famous lawsuit against McDonald’s after Stella Liebeck spilled hot coffee on herself. Having been shown at numerous film festivals from Sundance to Los Angeles, the movie has received rave reviews from The Washington Post, Variety and the Hollywood Reporter.

Harold Laufer of Davis & Kuelthau SC, Milwaukee, successfully represented Tailored Label Products Inc., a Menomonee Falls-based custom manufacturer of engineered labels and die cut adhesives, in its acquisition of the label products division of Stratix Corp., Norcross, Ga. Laufer acts as an adviser to owners and managers of middle market, family and closely held companies. He earned his law degree in 1974 from the University of Wisconsin Law School.

Christine Liu McLaughlin

Christine Liu McLaughlin, shareholder at Godfrey & Kahn SC, Milwaukee, was named Woman of the Year by the National Association of Professional Women. McLaughlin was honored for demonstrating excellence and dedication within her profession.

McLaughlin is a shareholder in the firm’s Labor, Employment & Immigration Practice Group at the Milwaukee office and is chairwoman of the firm’s Women’s Leadership Forum and Diversity Committee. She earned her law degree from Marquette University Law School in 1992.

Timothy Nixon, shareholder and leader of the Godfrey & Kahn SC, Milwaukee’s Business Finance and Restructuring Practice Group, has co-authored an Inside the Minds book, Chapter 15 Bankruptcy Strategies. The book provides an authoritative insider’s perspective on understanding the scope and overall goal of the bankruptcy code section dealing with international bankruptcy cases.

Nixon is a frequent lecturer and speaker on matters involving bankruptcy law and has been published extensively. He also has represented clients in cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, the court of appeals and in bankruptcy courts throughout the U.S. His cases have included some of the largest bankruptcies filed in the U.S. Nixon earned his law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1990.
