RACINE, Wis. (AP) – A Racine man convicted of fatally shooting another man after a card game has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

During Friday’s sentencing hearing, Jeremiah Brown told the judge he took responsibility for his “senseless act.” The 28-year-old apologized to his family and the victim’s family.

Brown pleaded guilty in July to second-degree reckless homicide while armed.

According to the criminal complaint, Brown was playing cards with 34-year-old Terrell Byers and others at a home in 2009. Prosecutors say Brown and Byers didn’t previously know each other.

The complaint says tensions developed during the night but eased after Brown left. He allegedly returned with a gun wrapped in plastic and shot Byers in the lower back.

A Journal Times of Racine report says the victim had four children.
