Appleton (AP) — It’s been more than four years since a Kaukauna man disappeared while facing charges that he slipped his girlfriend an illegal abortion drug to cause a miscarriage. Now Outagamie County officials are starting to use some of the $671,000 he forfeited in cash bond.
Authorities believe Manishkumar Patel fled the country after posting his $750,000 cash bond in 2007.
Some of the money went to compensate the victim and others who posted restitution claims. The other $671,000 went to the county.
The Post-Crescent of Appleton reported prosecutors set aside $250,000 for future extradition and prosecution costs. The County Board is putting the other $421,000 toward jail diversionary programs.
Jim Duncan of the county’s Law Enforcement Coordinating Council says the programs offer treatment and mentorship to offenders.
