MILWAUKEE (AP) – The Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission has cleared police in the death of a suspect in the back of a squad car.
The panel issued a report Thursday finding no wrongdoing by officers in 22-year-old Derek Williams’ death last July.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the commission concurred with earlier findings by Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm and the police department’s Internal Affairs Division.
However, the panel recommended that the department consider improving its training for officers to recognize potentially life-threatening medical conditions.
An attorney for the Williams’ family is taking steps to file a lawsuit that would seek $4 million on behalf of Williams’ three young children.
A police spokeswoman did not respond to requests for comment.
