MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A judge has lowered bail for a Madison truck driver and his wife who are accused of starving and torturing the man’s 15-year-old daughter.

Dane County Circuit Judge Julie Genovese on Friday lowered bail for the couple to $9,000 each.

Bail had been set at $22,500 for the 41-year-old man and at $30,000 for his 42-year-old wife.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports defense attorneys argued that the couple had no money and that their bail should be reduced to signature bonds.

A prosecutor told the judge that a website had been set up to raise money for the couple’s legal defense. But the man’s attorney says the website has not raised any money.

The couple has pleaded not guilty to all charges. They remain in jail Friday evening.
