LAS VEGAS (AP) – An animal rights advocacy group won a court order at least temporarily postponing euthanasia for a pet dog that it killed a Henderson boy celebrating his first birthday.
Clark County District Court Judge Rob Bare on Monday issued an 11th hour order halting officials’ plans to put down the 6-year-old mastiff-Rhodesian ridgeback mix named Onion on Tuesday.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the judge scheduled a Friday morning hearing on the fate of the 120-pound former family pet.
The New York-based Lexus Project wants to send the animal to a sanctuary outside Denver.
The boy’s family voluntarily gave the animal up for euthanasia after the April 27 death of Jeremiah Eskew-Shahan.
The boy’s father, Christopher Shahan, told the Review-Journal the dog deserves to die.
