Researching specific civil rights issues? You might want to check out the University of Michigan Law School’s Civil Rights Litigation Clearinghouse.

The website offers an extensive collection of documents and information about specific types of civil rights cases. Current case categories include Election/Voting Rights, Equal Employment, Fair Housing, Jail Conditions, Nursing Home Conditions, Public Accommodations, School Desegregation, Religious Freedom, Freedom of Speech and several others.

A discussion regarding how they decide which cases to include in the database can be found here.

The focus of the Clearinghouse is to identify cases “seeking policy or operational change” and try to make available the related docket and primary pleadings. Published opinions in the cases are accessed via a link to Lexis or Westlaw.

Each case profile includes a summary of the key issues, docket listing with links to documents, specific case details, and the names of the judges and attorneys involved. To locate items of interest, the Clearinghouse offers a variety of search options, including the ability to search by type of case, document, or person’s name.
