MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Gov. Scott Walker says he’s not using public money to pay for the attorneys representing him in connection with a Milwaukee County investigation of several former aides and associates.

Walker’s campaign released a statement Friday quoting Walker as saying he formed a legal fund to pay for the expenses incurred in cooperation with the inquiry, and that no public money will be used.

The statement came hours after the liberal group One Wisconsin Now demanded to know who’s paying Walker’s legal bills.

Milwaukee County prosecutors have been conducting a John Doe investigation into activity in the Milwaukee County executive’s office when Walker held the position before becoming governor.

Walker hasn’t been charged with wrongdoing but has agreed to meet with prosecutors. Five former aides and associated have been charged.
