EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) — Elected officials statewide have been watching a case in Eau Claire County that involves retirement contributions.

A Chippewa County judge ruled Monday that Eau Claire County should repay the sheriff and treasurer money they contributed to the Wisconsin Retirement System since March. Judge Steven Cray ruled county officials violated state law by reducing the elected officials’ paychecks in order to make contributions toward their retirement.

Sheriff Ron Cramer sued the county after the state Legislature passed a controversial bill that requires most public sector employees to contribute to their retirement and pay more toward their health insurance.

The Eau Claire Leader-Telegram reports county treasurer Larry Lokken joined Cramer’s lawsuit, which argued that changing officials’ pay during their elected terms violates state law.
