EUREKA, Ill. (AP) – The courthouse in Woodford County had a serious weight problem.
A structural engineer says several hundred thousand pounds of paper stored on the 114-year-old building’s second floor could be a threat to the downtown Eureka structure.
County Board Chairman Stan Glazier told The Journal-Star newspaper in Peoria that part of the courthouse was closed from late last week through Monday so the documents could be moved.
Glazier said the paperwork was stored in the circuit clerk’s office. The county considered adding space for more storage. But an engineer pointed out that the weight of all that paper had caused the floor to sag an inch.
The documents were moved to a rented space nearby and the courthouse is open again.
