Reference librarian and docket administrator, Quarles & Brady LLP

The last item on the agenda for the weekly legal library team meeting at Quarles and Brady LLP is a quick session to share advances they’ve come across in the field.

Every week, reference librarian and docket administrator Susie Jankowski points out a new tech tool, online database or resource for legal patrons.

“It’s an absolutely fabulous characteristic for a librarian,” said Gail Munden, administrator of legal information services at Quarles, “but it’s also a wonderful aspect of a worker who’s been with Quarles all these years to never let her work get stale.”

Backed by her master’s degree in library science, Jankowski recently returned to reference librarian work at the firm after years away in another records position. With books on the backburner of librarian work, Jankowski dove into computer-powered research and reference with interest and enthusiasm, Munden said.

The other half of Jankowski’s time is taken by docket work, a vital but often misunderstood element of court scheduling. Munden said Jankowski’s work is “flawless” and recognized as “mission-critical” throughout the firm.

Rather than taking a well-worn route with either of her positions, Jankowski continues to flourish nearly 30 years after she was first hired “because of her flexibility and because she’s constantly learning new things,” Munden said.

“She’s always on top of it,” Munden said.” This is a woman who doesn’t have an age.”
