For Linda Sharretts and her home of New Richmond, law and community are one and the same.

On a daily basis, Sharretts is the jack-of-all-trades at Bakke Norman SC, where she heads up human resources, computing and bookkeeping administration; all based on her years of experience as a legal assistant in probate, estate planning, real estate, and family and municipal law.

During her years at Bakke Norman, Sharretts has established a vibrant local connection for the New Richmond-based firm. Her regional legal knowledge is a valuable resource, said Gary Bakke, founding attorney.

Sharretts strong local ties prompted her, along with a now-retired attorney, to establish St. Croix County’s first free legal clinic. Since 2005, Sharretts has helped schedule and attend to family, small claims and other legal concerns for those uncertain how to or unable to access the law. More than 30 people a month use the service and it’s become a go-to resource for institutional legal entities in the county.

“They’re really filling a social need,” Bakke said. “And getting six attorneys to show up every month of the year and making sure you have the right mix of talent there, that’s all Linda. And she shows up, too, and does the screenings.”

Sharretts has plans to retire from the firm in 2012, Bakke said, but she’s expressed interest in continuing her work at the legal clinic, ensuring she’ll play a role in the community for years to come.
