Judge to weigh competency in woman’s death

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A judge in Madison is set to evaluate whether a man accused of leaving his elderly aunt to die is competent.

Judge Daniel Moeser

Prosecutors say 45-year-old Steven King was living with his mother, 71-year-old Veronica King, in Madison in 2009 when his aunt, 71-year-old Mary Coleman fell in the house. They say the Kings left Coleman on the floor unattended and she eventually died. Both of them face a host of charges, including being party to first-degree reckless homicide.

Steven King’s attorney, Terry Frederick, asked Dane County Circuit Judge Daniel Moeser last month to hold a hearing to evaluate his client’s competency. The proceeding is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
