Four recent law school graduates are in the running for an unpaid special assistant position at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Madison.
Applications for the one-year appointment were accepted through Sept. 9.
The position’s specific requirements — the person hired cannot practice law outside of the office, cannot serve if he or she has had an employment offered deferred by a law firm, and must have one year of experience – may have limited the number of people who applied, according to an office representative.
The position’s possible civil case assignments include foreclosures, bankruptcies and social security, according to the vacancy announcement. It also could involve “representing the United States as primary and/or secondary counsel in federal, state and bankruptcy court proceedings,” the announcement stated.
Applicants scheduled for interviews all graduated within the past five years, according to the office.
While the vacancy announcement hinted at the potential for long-term employment, authorization from the U.S. Department of Justice is needed and the individual would have to apply for vacant prosecutor positions.
