Milwaukee County Clerk of Circuit Court John Barrett is cautioning people about a possible fine collection scam.
The issue became apparent when a deputy court clerk for Milwaukee County was targeted by the scammers, according to a news release from the court. The clerk, whose name was not released, received a phone call at home from her office phone number and was told she had unpaid parking violations. After initially believing it was a prank, the clerk realized someone was attempting to falsely represent themselves as being from the clerk of circuit court, the release said, and the clerk called the sheriff’s office to inform them of the call.
All collection attempts made by the Clerk of Circuit Court’s office are in writing and through Credit Management Control, according to the court. The fraudulent calls claiming otherwise appear on caller ID as Milwaukee County, whereas calls that actually come from Milwaukee County appear as restricted, the release went on to state.
There has been at least one other reported attempt by the scammers, Barrett said.
