SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) — Sheboygan Common Council members have retained two attorneys to investigate complaints against the city’s mayor.

The complaints allege public drunkenness and lewd behavior by Mayor Bob Ryan. He’s an admitted alcoholic who has promised not to drink again while in office.

Meeting at a Committee of the Whole on Wednesday night, council members voted to retain former U.S. Attorney Steven Biskupic as special prosecutor to investigate the complaints. Aldermen also voted to retain attorney Joseph Voelkner to advise the council on whether to pursue removing Ryan from office through a quasi-judicial hearing.

The Sheboygan Press reports Ryan distributed a letter to council members written by his attorney which, in part, threatened to file a claim against the city if the mayor was removed from office for his alcoholism.
