MADISON (AP) — A state appeals court has denied an appeal by a Manitowoc County man sent to prison for life for killing a photographer.
Steven Avery was convicted of killing Teresa Halbach in 2005 after she went to the Avery family salvage yard to shoot photos of vehicles for a magazine.
Avery argued he deserved a new trial, in part, because he wasn’t allowed to blame anyone else for killing Halbach. The appeals court said Avery’s claim was properly deemed inadmissible.
A jury convicted Avery of first-degree intentional homicide and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole.
His nephew, Brendan Dassey, was also convicted of helping his uncle kill the 25-year-old woman.
