WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) — The defense attorney for a man accused of driving drunk in a crash that killed his wife and daughter blames the defendant’s diabetes for the fatal wreck.

The lawyer for Travis Ploman is trying to convince jurors in Marathon County that the defendant suffered a diabetic reaction before he lost control of his SUV on Interstate 39 in Mosinee in 2009. The crash killed 40-year-old Jennifer Ploman and 12-year-old Erin Ploman. The couple’s 9-year-old son, Jordan, survived the accident.

Dr. John Carroll testified Monday that Ploman’s blood sugar level could explain his loss of control behind the wheel and his confrontational behavior after he rolled the SUV.

The Wausau Daily Herald reports Ploman had a blood alcohol level slightly above the legal limit for driving about three hours after the crash.
