MILWAUKEE (AP) — Three employees of the Milwaukee County Department of Health Services and two others have been charged with defrauding Wisconsin’s FoodShare program out of more than $350,000.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the sheriff’s office announced the three are suspected of issuing fraudulent Quest cards, used by program participants to buy food.
The charges allege the employees fraudulently opened and renewed FoodShare accounts in the names of former clients, people who didn’t exist or people who were in prison or financially ineligible.
The Quest cards were then mailed to the trio’s own addresses or to those of accomplices. In other instances, they allegedly sold the fraudulent cards, used the card personally or committed other crimes.
The sheriff’s office also claims they falsified records to perpetrate the scheme.
