MENOMONIE, Wis. (AP) — The police chief in a small western Wisconsin village is using the insanity defense against charges he had repeated sexual contact with two teenage boys.

The Leader-Telegram reports Wheeler police chief Gary L. Wayerski pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of mental defect on Tuesday to 14 felony charges.

The newspaper reports he has been suspended without pay from his part-time job as chief.

According to the criminal complaint, the 55-year-old Wayerski was mentoring a 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old after arresting them in March for breaking into a church in Wheeler, which has about 300 people.

The complaint says the boys claimed Wayerski showed them pornographic movies and computer images and fondled them individually and together.
