HILLSBORO, Wis. (AP) — Court documents show the western Wisconsin man who fatally shot his estranged wife and then took his own life had promised earlier to kill them both.

Fifty-three-year-old Anita Satterlee filed for divorce in June after 33 years of marriage to 55-year-old Joseph Satterlee. She was granted a restraining order against her husband in La Crosse County after he pushed her during an argument over money last month and threatened to kill her and himself.

The La Crosse Tribune cites court records which say Joseph Satterlee told a sheriff’s investigator that it was better that he and his wife be dead instead of live apart.

Authorities say Joseph Satterlee rammed his wife’s car Tuesday in Hillsboro, fatally shot her, climbed in the front seat of her car and shot himself.
