TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — A federal jury has convicted a Wisconsin man in the 1973 killing of a Tucson woman who was the daughter of an FBI agent.
Prosecutors say 57-year-old William Floyd Zamastil, of Waupan, was convicted Thursday of first-degree murder. He faces up to life in prison when he’s sentenced Oct .5.
A federal indictment in 2009 accused Zamastil of raping and murdering Leesa Jo Shaner. Her remains were found in September 1973 in a shallow grave at Fort Huachuca in southeastern Arizona.
Prosecutors believe Shaner was abducted from Tucson International Airport, where she had driven to pick up her husband on May 29, 1973.
Authorities say they became aware of Zamistil’s involvement in the Shaner case when he was imprisoned for the rape and murder of a Wisconsin woman in 1979.
