STEVENS POINT, Wis. (AP) — Officers have uncovered nearly 400 knives, ammunition, pepper spray and other items considered to be weapons during the first three months of metal detector screening at the Portage County Courthouse.
Security officers say in most cases, people simply forgot they had the weapons — or didn’t know the items weren’t allowed in the courthouse. New security procedures were enacted in late March. Traffic into the courthouse is funneled through one entrance where armed officers are posted at a metal detector.
The Stevens Point Journal says people have passed through the metal detector more than 12,000 times since the metal detector was set up.
