Wausau attorney Michael Moran will begin his judicial career two weeks early to provide some relief for the other four judges in Marathon County.

On Wednesday, Gov. Scott Walker appointed the veteran State Public Defender staff attorney to the bench, effective July 18, to fill the vacancy left by Judge Patrick Brady, 65, who retired on June 29.

Moran will spend his first month in judicial training, but will be able to handle cases two weeks early.

Moran won the Branch 5 seat in spring and was scheduled to start on Aug. 1.

“That is a good thing,” said Marathon County Clerk of Court Diane Sennholz. “We have a large caseload in the county and the branch was vacant.”

Moran worked as a staff attorney and office supervisor for the SPD office in Wausau for the past 20 years. He received his law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1991 and is a past-president of the Marathon County Bar Association.
