MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Dane County judge has ruled that a Republican state lawmaker can’t have his name added to the ballot for an upcoming recall election.

Judge Richard Niess ruled against Rep. John Nygren of Marinette on Friday afternoon.

State election officials ruled this week that Nygren wasn’t eligible to run. They said he submitted two fewer voter signatures than needed to qualify.

Nygren filed a lawsuit to challenge that decision. He argued that the Government Accountability Board failed to count signatures that should have been considered valid.

The recall election in question targets Democratic state Sen. Dave Hansen of Green Bay. He’s one of nine Wisconsin senators being targeted for recall following weeks of wrangling over parts of Gov. Scott Walker’s budget bill.
