Woman charged with bruising boyfriend’s son

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) — A 25-year-old Sheboygan woman is accused of spanking her boyfriend’s 6-year-old son hard enough to leave bruises that persisted for days.

Prosecutors say Katie M. Champeau is dating the boy’s father. She was charged Thursday with felony child abuse, which carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison.

According to the criminal complaint, the boy’s mother discovered the bruises this week after the boy had spent several days at his father’s house.

According to a Sheboygan Press report, the boy told investigators that Champeau had spanked him with a wooden spoon. Prosecutors say Champeau acknowledged her involvement, saying she was upset that the boy kept kicking her seat on the way home from a store.

Online court records didn’t list a defense attorney Friday.
