Madison (AP) – Some community groups want to set up a temporary camp across from the Capitol to protest Gov. Scott Walker’s budget proposals and efforts to recall Republican legislators.
We Are Wisconsin, an alliance of community groups, labor unions and others have asked the city for the permit.
The Wisconsin State Journal reports that a city commission will have a meeting Friday to consider the application for the rally that would begin Saturday and continue through June 20.
Walker’s proposed budget is being debated by the Legislature’s budget committee this week and is expected to be sent to the full Legislature by the weekend.
Alderman Mike Verveer says the city is working to balance the rights of free speech with the needs of local businesses.
