OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) — An Army reservist and former Winnebago County board member says Aurora Health Care fired him illegally because of his military service.

In last week’s federal lawsuit, Lt. Col. Mike Hert claims Aurora violated a law that protects National Guard members from losing their jobs and benefits during military service. He seeks $1 million in damages.

Hert, who also served in Iraq in 2004 and 2008, returned from Africa in September 2010 and rejoined Aurora that December in his job as a physician relations consultant. But he claims he was placed in performance monitoring as a new employee and was given new responsibilities. He was terminated in January.

The Oshkosh Northwestern reports that Milwaukee-based Aurora issued a statement, saying Aurora doesn’t discuss personnel issues but it complies with all laws.
