Washington — The U.S Department of Labor has launched an app that helps employees track the hours they work and determine the wages they are owed.

Wage and hour claims and class actions have been on the rise, thanks in part to stepped up efforts by the Department of Labor.

The free app, available in English and Spanish at the agency’s wage and hour division webpage, gives workers a time sheet to keep track of their hours independently of their employers. Workers can add comments related to their timesheet, view a summary of hours in daily, weekly and monthly formats, and e-mail the summary as an attachment.

According to a Department of Labor press release, such information “could prove invaluable during a wage and hour investigation when an employer has failed to maintain accurate employment records.”

“This app will help empower workers to understand and stand up for their rights when employers have denied their hard-earned pay,” said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis in the press release.

The app is currently compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch. The Department of Labor will explore updates to make it compatible with other smartphone platforms, such as Android and BlackBerry, and to add new features to track other forms of pay, such as tips, commissions, bonuses, deductions, holiday pay, pay for weekends, shift differentials and pay for regular days of rest.
