MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A bill that does away with Milwaukee’s ordinance requiring employers to provide workers with paid sick leave has passed the Legislature and now heads to Gov. Scott Walker, who says he’s likely to sign it.

The Assembly passed it 59-35 Tuesday. It previously cleared the Senate.

The bill comes after a state appeals court upheld the ordinance last month following the state Supreme Court deadlocking on it. Milwaukee voters overwhelmingly approved the ordinance by referendum more than two years ago but it has been tied up in courts ever since and never enacted.

The bill would prevent local governments from enacting paid sick leave legislation as well as void Milwaukee’s ordinance. Democratic Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett opposes the sick leave law, saying it could drive jobs out of the city.
