MILWAUKEE (AP) — A federal judge in Wisconsin has ruled NCR Corp. and Appleton Papers Inc. must pay an estimated $700 million to help clean a contaminated river.

The judge this week ruled Atlanta-based NCR and the Appleton-based paper company are responsible for cleaning up the Green Bay-area Fox River.

The waterway is contaminated with toxic PCBs. NCR used the chemicals to make paper products at the site from the 1950s to the 1970s.

NCR had asked the court to have other former and current paper companies share in cleanup costs. Instead it also must reimburse other companies for costs incurred for some cleanup efforts.

NCR spokeswoman Anne Marie Agnelli said the company is assessing the ruling but doesn’t expect a major impact. A message left with Appleton wasn’t immediately returned.
