Godfrey & Kahn is on the move.

The Milwaukee-based law firm inked a deal to be the anchor tenant in a new downtown development, scheduled to break ground this year.

Godfrey & Kahn is expected to occupy at least three-and-a-half floors in the mixed-use development and could move in by 2013.

The project, known as Washington Square, is a joint venture between developers Irgens Development Partners, LLC and Van Buren Management, Inc.

It will be located in the current parking lots bounded by E. Mason, N. Jefferson and N. Jackson Streets. The site is across from the Pfister Hotel and Mason Street Grill and adjacent to The Milwaukee Club.

In a statement, incoming managing partner Nicholas P. Wahl said “We have been working with the Irgens’ team for several years to find a new home for the firm and we really like this particular location.”

The firm currently rents approximately 80,000 square feet of space at 780 N. Water St., where Godfrey & Kahn has been headquartered for more than 40 years.

In 1968, the firm moved into what was then the newly completed Marshall & Ilsley Bank Building and leased 8,504 square feet of space on the 11th floor.

Assuming lenders line up to finance the development, construction of the building will take approximately two years to complete, according to Irgens and Van Buren.
