Wisconsin’s largest law firms are still feeling the pinch of a bad economy. While a few added attorneys over the last year, a number have seen another decline.

Of the 20 largest law firms this year, only nine added attorneys. Of those nine firms, only one added more than five. That firm was Foley & Lardner, which widened its margin as the state’s largest firm by adding 44 lawyers, going from 282 to 326. The state’s second largest firm, Quarles & Brady, lost 16 lawyers, going from 285 to 269. Nine of the 20 largest firms lost attorneys; two had no change. This section is intended to be a guide to how the state’s largest law firms operate as reported by the firms themselves.

It includes information on starting associates’ salaries, benefits for attorneys and staff, and breakdowns of diversity of the firms. Many provided information about the hourly expectations for new attorneys and the benefits they provide lawyers and staff. It also contains a variety of information about each of the firms, including key contact people and summaries of their practices.
