Never underestimate the power of a wise mentor.

Lydia J. Chartre was convinced she’d use her law degree in the corporate/transactional world. Then, while clerking at Petrie & Stocking SC, she met Daniel J. Miske, who urged her to consider litigation. Suddenly she changed her mind.

Once she joined the firm as an associate, Miske gave Chartre a taste of practice in condominium law.

This past February, Chartre came to Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek SC at Miske’s urging.

Chartre’s condominium law practice allows her to use her skills both as a general business adviser and in the courtroom, and she thrives on that variety.

Just three years out of law school, Chartre prevailed before the Wisconsin Court of Appeals in a published decision in Kleewood Inc. v. Hart Design & Mfg. Inc., a dispute regarding an employment recruiting fee agreement where the court agreed with her interpretation of the employer-paid agent statute.

What is the best part of being an attorney?

Helping people. I know that sounds trite or contrived, but it really is true.

What song is on heavy rotation on your iPod?

Any song that my four-year-old daughter likes. Currently, it’s “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers. She sings along at the top of her lungs.

If you hadn’t become a lawyer, what would you have done?

Something related to cooking — maybe a caterer? My Mom is a gourmet cook who spoiled me growing up with all that delicious food. Or, I love to sing, so I’d be a professional singer.

Who is your favorite historical figure?

Abraham Lincoln. I wrote a paper about him for a business law course I took in college, and it really inspired me.

What is your motto?

“Do first, apologize later.”

What trait do you most like in others?

A sense of humor. Everything I DVR is a comedy.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Balance in my life. Having enough time to pursue my career and lots of family time, too.

Where would you like to live?

Anywhere on a lake.

How many countries have you visited? Which ones?

I was in choir in college and we toured all across Europe. I’ve also been to Canada and Mexico.
I hope to visit more sometime.
