Lindsey R. King’s four favorite words in the English language might just be “No probable cause found.”

King frequently represents employers facing discrimination charges before the Equal Rights Division.

Happily, she’s read those words often in the two years she’s been with Petrie & Stocking SC in Milwaukee.

“It’s one piece of paper with very few words on it,” King said, “but to me it’s very exciting because it tells me I’ve done my job right — I provided enough information that it didn’t even give rise to a need for a hearing.”

King’s practice is diverse and she thrives on that variety. While defense work is typically her focus, occasionally she represents plaintiffs as well. She handles both business and general civil litigation, as well as counseling clients to avoid litigation, with an emphasis in employment law.

She finds the area of noncompete agreements especially fascinating because the law is rapidly developing.

What is the best part of being an attorney?

I like using my skills to help someone avoid trouble. I like problem solving from the get-go. I like the day-to-day advising so people don’t have to be involved litigation if at all possible.

If you hadn’t become a lawyer, what would you have done?

A personal trainer and nutritional adviser. I was a swimmer in college and I’m really into marathons and triathlons. I also coached swimming through college and law school, and still do a little bit now.

If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive?

“What took you so long?”

What is your motto?

“Good is not good enough when better is expected.”

What’s the first CD you bought with your own money?

Some sort of 80s compilation; I think it was called “Totally 80s.” I’ve always really been into 80s music, and Rush is one of my favorite bands.

What is the first concert you went to?

Pink Floyd at Camp Randall. I was eight or nine at the time. My Dad took me and I had a great time.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

At work: “Moreover” and “just to play devil’s advocate … .” At home: “Let’s make a list,” or “Let’s take a second to get organized.” It drives my husband a little bit crazy.
