ImageJuan Ramirez says his motto is “Never quit.”

“I loathe being defeated,” he said.

It’s a motto that has served him well in the litigation practice group at Michael Best & Friedrich. One case file has been on his desk ever since he joined the firm in 2002.

Representing the owner of a restaurant, he lost in circuit court on summary judgment, over the scope of a restrictive covenant, only to prevail in the Court of Appeals. Back in circuit court, he lost on summary judgment again, only to prevail once more in the Court of Appeals.

Finally prevailing in the circuit court after a trial, the court has held that his client is entitled to attorneys fees. Although the amount has not yet been determined and reduced to judgment, Ramirez expects the award will exceed $1 million for his client, and he anticipates yet another appeal over the fee award.
But that won’t stop him.

“I get most of my drive from standing up for the little guy,” Ramirez said.

Ramirez has also successfully argued in the Wisconsin Supreme Court, obtaining attorney fees for his client after convincing the court that retroactive application of the state’s amended statute regarding frivolous lawsuits would be unjust.

In nominating Ramirez, Michael Best partner Nate Cade said: “I am not afraid to unleash Juan on my worst enemies, for he is a tireless advocate, well reasoned, competent, and able to think on his feet — all the qualities of a great litigator.”
