What do Charlize Theron, Carrie Underwood and attorney Andrea J. Farrell have in common?

They’re all animal lovers and PETA supporters. But while the first two have made headlines primarily as entertainers, Farrell has caught the media’s attention for groundbreaking animal-rights litigation in Wisconsin.

Farrell is representing PETA and the Alliance for Animals against the University of Wisconsin for its use of sheep in experiments studying decompression sickness, better known as “the Bends.” Wisconsin law prohibits killing animals through decompression, but when Farrell’s clients brought this to the attention of the local district attorney, he refused to prosecute.

So Farrell petitioned the court to appoint a special prosecutor, which happened in June. The case is ongoing.

But animal law isn’t what monopolizes most of Farrell’s work. Rather, that’s employment law and constitutional law, both for plaintiffs, in addition to a smattering of constitutional criminal defense.

She additionally serves as a pro bono attorney for the Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue and Educational Center in Baraboo.
