As of April 9, the United State District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin is looking for a new magistrate judge to work out of the Milwaukee office.

The Judicial Conference of the United States authorized the appointment and a Merit Selection Panel of attorneys and other community members will review applicants and recommend five names to the court for consideration.

The court will make a final appointment.

Currently, there are three magistrate judges in the Milwaukee office – Aaron E. Goodstein, Patricia J. Gorence and William E. Callahan, Jr. – and one in the Green Bay office – James R. Sickel.

Magistrate judges typically conduct preliminary proceedings in felony criminal cases, trial and disposition of misdemeanor cases and conduct various civil pretrial matters and evidentiary proceedings on delegation from the judges of the district court.

Applications for the eight-year term must be received no later than April 29, 2010.
