After 15 years at Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek SC in Milwaukee, the last eight as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), attorney Mark A. Miller will step down by Dec. 31.

Miller, 52, said he plans to leave the legal field entirely and wants to explore opportunities to own and run his own business in the area.

“I haven’t practiced law in the last eight years and don’t want to stay in the legal field,” Miller said in an interview.

He said his departure is not related to the economy and he noted that WHD is in “good shape.”
Though two attorneys left the firm in February, WHD, which has more than 140 attorneys and three offices in the state, has avoided the layoffs and salary cuts seen across the country.

“There is nothing along those lines in the foreseeable future,” Miller said.

During his tenure as CEO, the firm added about 20 attorneys and created new practice groups in the areas of state and local tax law and information technology.

Miller joined WHD in 1994 and practiced as a corporate finance attorney. Prior to that, he practiced with his father, Victor Miller at the family law firm in St. Asians.

He graduated from Marquette University Law School in 1983 and is married with three children.
Miller said his successor is expected to be chosen in the next three months and he anticipates a smooth transition.
