Four of the six candidates recommended to succeed U.S. District Court Judge Barbara Crabb, were also sent to Sen. Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold as candidates for U.S. District Court Judge Shabaz.
The Federal Nomination Commission has sent a list of six names to the senators including former state Supreme Court Justice Louis B. Butler Jr., La Crosse County Circuit Court Judge Ramona A. Gonzalez, Anuj C. Desai of the University of Wisconsin Law School, William M. Conley of Foley & Lardner LLP, David E. Jones of Perkins Coie LLP, and Stephen J. Meyer of Meyer Law Office.
The six nominees for Crabb’s seat were selected from a list of 21 applicants.
In April, the commission forwarded four of those individuals – Butler, Gonzalez, Conley and Meyer – to the senators as candidates for Shabaz’s seat. Shabaz retired from the U.S. District Court, Western District of Wisconsin and Crabb is seeking senior status.
In May, Kohl and Feingold narrowed the list of four candidates for Shabaz’s seat to two, recommending Butler and Conley to President Barack Obama. Now the senators are expected to narrow the list of six candidates for Crabb’s seat.
