The National Association of Counties (NACo) is a national organization representing county government. Per their website, membership includes more than 2000 of the 3066 counties in the United States.

Some of the information on their website is limited to members only. However, they still offer much to the general researcher. One page available to the public which may help when researching county statistical information is their Data and Demographics page.

Topics available for query include County Square Mileage, County Payments in Lieu of Taxes, Household Income, and Population.

The site also includes individual county profiles listing officials, population, census facts and a listing of the municipalities within the county. NACo Research Division also provides a variety of sample codes and ordinances. The site presents a topical listing and a few samples of each.

Another useful menu item is the NACo “library.” Copies of survey results on variety of issues impacting counties can be found. Past survey reports include a foreclosure survey and emergency management. The library also supplies issue and research briefs (eg. Two 2008 issue briefs dealt with economic trends and the “REAL ID Act”). However, many of these reports are member-only publications so the researcher needs to follow the hyperlink to see if it is available to the public.
