I’m all for rivalries, but when they result in a broken jaw, it serves a reminder of how foolish they can be.
A couple of Chicago Cubs fan up from the Windy City to revel in the recent sweeping of our Brewers will stand trial in Milwaukee for battering a local fan after the game on July 29.

While rivalries can result in violent and sometimes fatal encounters – a Yankees fan ran over and killed a Red Sox devotee in New Hampshire this summer for vocalizing the popular mantra, “Yankees Suck” – most maintain a civil tone.
Still, there is no shortage of bright fans committing stupid crimes, but it is a bit embarrassing to ponder how many cases like the one pending in Milwaukee are adding to already overburdened court systems around the country.
Cooler heads don’t always prevail, especially after a couple of alcohol infused beverages, and I cannot imagine that any judge gets excited to review a case file which begins with someone throwing a Red Bull can at a bus.
It’s not easy for a passionate fan to suffer silently, but it sure beats a busted face, felony battery charges and a court date which could have gone to a case more worthy of being on the docket.
