The Medicare website provides an interesting tool entitled “Nursing Home Compare.” The purpose is to “provide detailed information about the past performance of every Medicare and Medicaid certified nursing home in the country.” The site allows the researcher to query by geographical location, proximity or by specific nursing home.
A significant amount of data is available from this site. The results initially list basics such as date of certification, number of beds, type of ownership, etc. Selecting specific facilities leads to additional data on quality measures, number of health deficiencies, number of fire safety deficiencies, and nursing/CNA staff. The details on inspections can be very informative. It includes the date of inspections, where the nursing home failed, date of correction, level of harm, and affect on residents.
