I was recently on the Milwaukee Public Library website and noticed something new. It is a database called Project Shipshape. I’ve known about the library’s great Maritime collection, but not familiar with this project. I spoke to a Humanities librarian at Milwaukee Public Library and found out that Project Shipshape went online in January.
So, what is it? The Project Shipshape database contains information on thousands of Great Lakes vessels. “Each record contains information on the type of vessel, when and where it was built, and size of the vessel. Most records include the name(s) of the person or organization who built the vessel and for whom it was built. Many records include additional information on the physical characteristics of the ship such as the engine(s), boiler, hull, hatches, and compartments. Most records include the official number of the vessel.”
The availability of online research is great for Maritime attorneys and enthusiasts. The main files, which can contain photographs and articles, are housed at Milwaukee Public Library as part of the Great Lakes Marine collection. The very knowledgeable library staff is happy to assist you with both the database and library resources. For assistance, call 414-286-3061.
