Wisconsin’s largest law firm will have a new chair and CEO as of June 1.

Jay Rothman, a partner in the Milwaukee office of Foley & Lardner LLP, will succeed Ralf Boer as head of the firm. Foley has more than 300 attorneys in the state.

The two have worked for the better part the last year on the succession plan after Rothman was elected to the position by Foley’s management committee last year.

Rothman joined the firm in 1986 and practices primarily in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, securities law, takeover defense and general corporate and business law. He has also served as a member of the management committee for the last nine years and is the former chair of the firm’s Transactional & Securities Practice.

Boer served as chairman for nine years and said in a statement that he plans to return to practice full-time with the firm.

The change marks the third time in the last two years that three of the largest Wisconsin-based firms have made leadership changes.

In 2009, non-lawyer Paul Eberle became the chief executive at Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek SC, and earlier this year Nick Wahl took over as managing partner at Godfrey & Kahn SC.
