Lawrence University in Appleton will bestow an honorary degree on former U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold this summer.

The university will recognize Feingold with a doctor of humane letters degree on June 5. Feingold will also serve as the principal commencement speaker.

Feingold served three terms in the U.S. Senate before losing his re-election bid in November to Oshkosh businessman Ron Johnson.

The former senator is a visiting professor at the Marquette University Law School this spring and is also writing a book.

Godfrey & Kahn announces the addition of Brian C. Spahn to its Litigation Practice Group in the firm’s Milwaukee office.

Prior to joining the firm, Spahn was a litigation attorney with Sutherland Asbill & Brennan in Washington, D.C.

Spahn has represented clients in complex commercial cases in both federal and state courts. He has handled financial services, antitrust, employment and securities litigation matters, as well as managed complex class action defenses.

Spahn received his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin Law School.

Teams from 12 Wisconsin high schools will compete next month in the Annual Wisconsin High School Mock Trial Tournament semifinal event sponsored by the State Bar of Wisconsin.

Top scoring teams from ten regional events will compete in Madison on March 13-14. The team that finishes first in that competition will go on to represent Wisconsin at the National Mock Trial Championship in Phoenix on May 7-9.

Top-ranked teams from each of ten regions will be joined in Madison by two wildcard teams that finished second in the regional competitions. The advancing teams are: Superior High School – Team 2; Green Bay East High School – Team 1; Rhinelander High School – Team 1; Xavier (Appleton) High School – Team 1; La Crosse High School; Sun Prairie High School; Kettle Moraine High School – Team 1; Shorewood High School – Team 1; Lodi High School – Team 1; St. Catherine’s (Racine) High School; Lakeland Union High School; and Bay Port High School – Team 1.

The national law firm of Quarles & Brady (www.quarles.com) announced that Stephen J. Gardner has joined the firm’s Madison office as an associate in the Commercial Litigation Group.

Gardner’s previous experience includes serving as a law clerk to Chief Judge Edward J. Damich of the United States Court of Federal Claims and practicing at a large Washington, D.C. area firm, where he focused on global patent litigation and patent prosecution. He earned his law degree, cum laude, from Marquette University Law School.

Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek (www.whdlaw.com) announces the addition of two attorneys to its Litigation–Business Practice Group in the Madison office.

Tom Heneghan has joined the firm as a partner practicing in the areas of Intellectual Property Litigation and Business Litigation and Melissa Caulum has joined the firm as an attorney practicing in the area of Business Litigation.

Heneghan is a trial lawyer practicing nationally out of the firm’s Madison office. He focuses his practice on complex intellectual property and business litigation. He received his law degree from the DePaul University College of Law.

Caulum is an attorney in the firm’s Madison office, and focuses her practice on business litigation. She received her law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School.

The Thomas More Society, a Milwaukee association of Catholic lawyers, has elected Mollie Newcomb, an attorney with Boyle Fredrickson, to succeed Bruce Arnold of Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek as the society’s president. Newcomb has served on the society’s Board of Governors for three years and will be its first female president.

The society holds events, including the annual Red Mass, to advance the social, intellectual and spiritual welfare of its members and to apply the principles of their shared faith to their shared profession.
Other officers elected at the Febr. 16 Annual Meeting are: President-Elect Frank Pasternak, Pasternak & Zirgibel; Secretary Mark Andres, Andres Law Firm; Treasurer Justin Longley, Stark Investments; New Board of Governors members elected at the meeting were: Rebecca Bradley, Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek; Honorable Ellen R. Brostrom, Francis Hughes, of Fox, O’Neill & Shannon.
In addition, Professor Melissa Greipp, Marquette University Law School, was elected to a second term.

Hurtado SC, Counselors at Law, announces that attorney Kimberly A. Hurtado was elected to the Board of Governors of the American College of Construction Lawyers. The group was founded in 1990 and recognizes exemplary lawyers having national and international expertise in construction law. Hurtado graduated in 1987 from Marquette University Law School.
