MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin’s attorney general is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to protect the state’s Republican-drawn legislative districts.

Attorney General Brad Schimel, a Republican, and other attorneys for the state, filed a brief Thursday urging the court to reject the reasoning of a group of voters who argue the boundaries unconstitutionally discriminate against Democrats.

The state’s attorneys say the argument that statewide partisan gerrymandering exists is an overly broad social science “hodgepodge” and doesn’t compute with prior Supreme Court decisions.

A panel of three federal judges ruled in the voters’ favor in November, prompting Schimel to appeal to the Supreme Court.

A dozen states and the Republican National Committee have filed friend-of-the-court briefs urging the Supreme Court to overturn the ruling.
