MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A state appeals court says a Kenosha County judge properly accused a man of maintaining a harem when he sentenced him on a domestic-violence charge.

Judge Bruce Schroeder sentenced Jamal Thames to the maximum six years in prison last year for attacking his girlfriend. Thames argued on appeal that the sentence was too harsh and that Schroeder had improperly accused him of running a “serial harem” for impregnating two women at the same time 26 years ago.

The 2nd District Court of Appeals upheld Thames’ sentence Wednesday. The court found that his sentence isn’t so excessive that it would shock the public. He also found the harem remark was apposite to Thames’ character and that Thames has eight children by four different women.

Thames’ attorney didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
