MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Deputy Attorney General Andy Cook plans to leave the state Department of Justice at the end of the week.

The agency issued a news release Wednesday saying that Cook’s last day will be Friday. The release said he’s leaving to pursue “opportunities outside of state service.” The release included a statement from Cook saying he has decided to return to the public sector. He did not elaborate.

Cook served as an adviser on Attorney General Brad Schimel campaign and has been his top aide at DOJ since Schimel was elected in 2014. Schimel called him a “dear friend” in the news release.

The release said Schimel has promoted DOJ Senior Counsel Paul Connell to the deputy post and picked Assistant Deputy Attorney General Delanie Breuer as new senior counsel.
